Resident Evil: Extinction (2007)

Survivors of the Raccoon City catastrophe travel across the Nevada desert, hoping to make it to Alaska. Alice (Jovovich) joins the caravan and their fight against the evil Umbrella Corp.

Milla Jovovich (Alice), Oded Fehr (Carlos), reprising their roles from Resident Evil: Apocalypse and Ali Later (Claire), newcomer to the series most noted from Final Destination 1 & 2 and Heroes (NBC) along with seasoned direction from Russell Mulcahy bring to the screen their “A” game to the big screen.

Extinction is well enough written that it could almost stand on it’s own without the use of the 2 previous films. The characters are engaging towards each other and they give the audience a real sense community. They make you feel that all would be lost for them if they had not stuck together through these trying times.

There are only a few down sides that I can even quantify. I would have liked to see the writers explore more of the powers that Claires character has. It feels as though not much has changed for out main heroine since the last movie and that would have been fine if they would have given it a plot twist somewhere to really explain this but Extinction didn’t. It also would have been nice to see the Umbrella corporation expand its debauchery more by coming up with some fresh entities except for the baddie that was at the end of the movie totally by mistake. Lastly, I know this is too late for them to rectify, I would love to see a production that takes the game franchise at it’s face value and not in the spirit of. God knows there is enough rich story already in the game venue that could keep people on there toes for years to come and maybe that’s just what the franchise needs to shake things up a bit. Let’s give Milla a break in the fourth one and make a movie that is based on the Resident Evil 4 game. Now that would be a killer flick.

George Romero would be pleased to see how far that his zombie genre has come since it’s inception. Though you don’t see much of anything that is new you do have a few parts that can make you feel that twinge that you want to jump.

To date the only zombie flicks that I feel can upstage Extinction would be 28 Days Later (2002) and 28 Weeks Later (2007) simply because of how strong those films are all around. There simply isn’t going to be much that anyone can do to really touch the quality that is in the “Later” franchise.

Is the movie going to be worth owning? I say this, if anyone was disappointed by Apocalypse and wishes to redeem their Resident Evil collection then I say pay homage to the production companies and do the right thing and pay them their dues with this flick. They have really done a nice job.

This movie gets 3.5/5 stars
