WAR (2007)

From IMDB:

An FBI Agent seeks vengeance on a mysterious assassin known as “Rogue” who murdered his partner.

This was a very well put together flick that pits 2 waring factions of the Japanese underground ( The Yakuza and the Triads) against each other while the protagonist, Jet Li as Rogue, orchestrates their dismantle.

Jason Stratham’s character, F.B.I. agent Crawford, is out to seek revenge for the death of his former partner and his family by the hands of the infamous and elusive Rogue.

The script is well written and although it doesn’t have the flash of some of the other Jet Li films in the martial arts area the film makes up for it by the sheer grittiness that Jason Statham portrays in his signature over the top manner that he likes to deliver to his audience.

The director Phillip G. Atwell hasn’t had a lot of credit to his portfolio, making this the 2nd major production in his career. National Treasure, as second unit director, was his his first. If Mr. Atwell can keep directing films of this caliber with a good series of plot twist and entertainment I can see some very good things for him in the future. Though not Oscar material by any means it is definitely a good flick to pick up and settle in for a night to watch.

If your a Jet Li or Jason Statham fan and must have a film to add to your action collection this will be a nice fit for you. Though it isn’t the strongest performance for either of them it will give you a good time trying to figure out what all is going on. If you are looking for really strong movies that are a must have to either one of their collections I might suggest sticking with The Transporter (2002) or Crank (2006) for Mr. Statham and Fearless (2006), Unleashed (2005) or Romeo Must Die (2000) for Jet Li.

This movie gets a solid 3.5/5 stars
